>LOXALL21 Introduction

Introducing the follow-on product to the LOX2000 Sync-Lock module, combining the time tested

performance and physical form-factor of the LOX2000 with exciting new features such as the ability to

Sync-Lock to either Bi-level or Tri-level video. Add the optional LED display module and have a direct

readout of the input frame rate and system lock status. The LOXALL21 is identical to the LOX2000 in both

size and pinout. It uses the same personality EEPROMs. It expands on the LOX2000’s capabilities by

allowing Sync-lock to virtually any frame rate or video standard on the planet. And optionally it can

display the frame rate and lock status.

 
 

>LOXALL21 Introduction

The LOXALL21 sync-lock module is used to synchronize computer displays and scanned signage to an arbitrary video frame rate.

LOXALL21 sync-locks to a video sync generator.

The same video sync generator also feeds the sync-lock input of a film or video camera.

The net effect is to synchronize the camera to the display or signage.

This allows the display or signage to by photographed by the camera without the visually disruptive light or dark bars commonly seen when observing a scanned display through a non-synchronized film or video camera.

>Theory of Operation

LOXALL21 enables sync-lock of any device that uses a 5 MHz to 128 MHz crystal or oscillator as it’s master clock and that outputs a stable, clock derived, frame pulse near the frame rate of the video sync generator.

Installation of LOXALL21 requires the removal of the existing crystal or oscillator.

LOXALL21 replaces the crystal or oscillator frequency with its own variable frequency.

The replacement clock frequency, which is output by LOXALL21, changes to match the frame rate of the target device to the frame rate of the sync generator video black signal.

If the target device frame rate can be made to match the external video black frame rate, LOXALL21 will sync-lock.

If the frame rate of the target device and the frame rate of the sync generator are too far apart, they can't be made to sync-lock as is and the target device frame rate must be changed.

If the target device is a computer video card, change the card’s frame rate and/or resolution in the host computer ‘control panel’.

As various video card frame rates and video sync generator frame rates are selected, the LOXALL21 output frequency raises or lowers to keep sync-lock.

This equates to larger pixels at lower frequencies and smaller pixels at higher frequencies.

The visual effect of this is one of changing image size.

This change in size can be compensated for in many cases by re-adjustment of the display monitor.

In cases of severe size distortion or even non-lock, host computer ‘control panel’ changes or user supplied divide-ratio change programs can help.

 

>Automatic Frequency Store

1. Auto-Store On

LOXALL21 can be directed to memorize the exact frequency of optimal sync-lock.

This enables the video reference feed to be removed with no change in LOXALL21 output frequency.

For example, a target device using LOXALL21 may be phased to an arbitrary video source and will retain the exact frame rate and V Phase as the source even after removal of the source signal.

Even after power off/on, as long as the target device's frame rate returns to the same value as before loss of power, the target device's output frequency will match the source frequency(although not it's V phase).

2. Auto-Store Off

LOXALL21 can be directed to not memorize the sync-lock frequency.

This allows more control over the performance of the LOXALL21 which will still lock to the entire range of frequencies permitted by the upper and lower limits but which will return to the stored EEPROM frequency upon removal of the external video source signal.

Power on frequency is also pulled from EEPROM.

3. Auto-Store On/Off Control

The Auto-Store function is controlled via a byte of data contained in the EEPROM.

Writing a 00H byte to this location allows the sync-lock frequency to be written into EEPROM.

Writing a 01H to the location prevents the EEPROM from being written to.

LOXALL21 will memorize the exact clock output frequency necessary to produce optimal sync-lock of the target device.

This is accomplished during a brief “training” period when LOXALL21 automatically adjusts itself to bring the target device into synchronization with the video sync generator.

The length of the training period is directly proportional to the difference in frame rates between the last video frame rate applied to LOXALL21 and the new frame rate.

Once LOXALL21 obtains and memorizes information about both the new video frame rate and the target device frame rate and phase, subsequent training periods are greatly reduced.

Training periods occur each time the sync generator video black signal is re-applied.

This enables the video black reference feed to be removed with no change in the target device’s frame rate or vertical phase.

For example, a target device using LOXALL21 may be sync-locked to an arbitrary video frame rate and will retain the same frame rate and vertical phase as the source sync generator even after removal of the source reference signal.

Even after power off/on, as long as the target device's line count returns to the same value as before loss of power, the target device's frame rate will match the last source frame rate (although not it's vertical phase).

Re-application of the same video black signal results in a near instantaneous training period.

 

> FRAME RATE DOUBLER
LOXALL21 is a digitally locked loop and as such utilizes a reference pulse and a feedback pulse.

The reference pulse is derived from the video black signal input from the sync generator.

The feedback pulse is generally a vertical rate (low frequency) pulse returned from the target device's internal countdown chain.

The frame rate doubler divides the feedback pulse rate in half.

This allows the target device to run at twice the speed of the reference pulse and remain sync-locked.

Example 1:
J1 Pin 13 Open = Frame rate doubler OFF (1 to 1 correspondence of reference pulse to feedback pulse)

i.e. Reference = 24.00 Frames Per Second Interlaced (48.00 Fields Per Second)

Feedback = 48.00 Frames Per Second Progressive

Example 2:
J1 Pin 13 Gnd = Frame rate doubler ON (1 to 2 correspondence of reference pulse to feedback pulse)

i.e. Reference = 24.00 Frames Per Second Interlaced (48.00 Fields Per Second)

Feedback = 96.00 Frames Per Second Progressive

 

>Feedback Pulse Preselector

LOXALL21 is a Digitally Locked Loop and as such utilizes a Reference pulse(Ext Sync In) and a Feedback pulse.

The Feedback pulse is generally a Vertical Rate(low frequency) pulse returned from the target device's internal countdown chain.

The Feedback Pulse Preselector divides the rate in half.

This allows the target device to run at twice the speed of the Reference pulse and remain sync-locked. i.e.

J1 Pin 13 Open = Feedback Pulse Preselector OFF (1 to 1 correspondence Ref to Feedback)

Ref = 24.00 Frames Per Second Interlaced / Feedback = 48.00 Frames Per Second Progressive

J1 Pin 13 Gnd = Feedback Pulse Preselector ON (1 to 2 correspondence Ref to Feedback)

>Data Communications - SERIAL DATA LINK

1. Data is Serial 9600 Baud 8-N-1 Duplex, Rx, Tx, Gnd only. RS-232 levels.

2. While in Lock Mode, LOXALL21 continuously outputs data in the form of “80H MMSB MSB LSB LLSB”.

Any data input during Lock Mode is ignored.

The data output format is as follows –“Header MMSB MSB LSB LLSB” where[MMSB MSB LSB LLSB] is the 32 bit Hexadecimal number that is loaded into the LOXALL21 DDS to producethe fundamental internal frequency.

This internal frequency is multiplied by selected rates(J3 strappable, stock = X2) to produce the final Clk Output frequency(J1 Pin3).

3. While no external signal is applied, data may be input to and output from LOXALL21.

A. To read the present DDS frequency in EEPROM, send ?(3FH) and receive [MMSB MSB LSB LLSB].

B. To write the new DDS frequency to EEPROM and load the DDS, changing frequency, send !(21H) and send [MMSB MSB LSB LLSB].

>DDS Calculations

[MMSB MSB LSB LLSB] = DEC2HEX(A/(B/C))

Where [MMSB MSB LSB LLSB] is the 32 bit Hexidecimal number that is loaded into the DDS.

Where B = DDS Clock Frequency in Hz

Therefore, the DDS Output Frequency = 7.159090 MHz (14.318180/Clock Multiplier)

>Hi and Lo Frequency Limits

1. Hi Limit

LOXALL21 uses a Direct Digital Synthesizer or DDS to produce the output frequency.

Being a sampled system, Nyquist determines that the DDS master clock frequency divided by 2 is the highest allowable frequency i.e. 50% of DDS master clock frequency.

Being a sampled system, a lo-pass reconstruction filter is mandatory and results in a maxium DDS output frequency 33% of DDS master clock frequency i.e. 50.000000 MHz DDS Clock = 16.500000 MHz DDS Output.

This determines the upper usable limit for the DDS.

For example:

During acquisition, and with a Hi Limit EEPROM value of 54, 54 XX XX XX is the upper limit allowed,

53 FF FF FF (16.406249 MHz) is loaded into the DDS and the Limit LED is flashed.

2. Lo Limit

LOX2001 uses a clock multiplier chip after the DDS to allow a wide range of output frequencies.

This multiplier chip has a minimum input frequency of 2.5 MHz.

This determines the lower usable limit for the DDS.

For example:

During acquisition, and with a Lo Limit EEPROM value of 0C, 0C XX XX XX is the lower limit allowed, 0D 00 00 00 (2.539062 MHz) is loaded into the DDS and the Limit LED is flashed.

>EEPROM FOR PARAMETER STORAGE - EEPROM Description

1. Clock Out frequency determined by data stored in EEPROM.

A. Frequency data automatically loaded from EEPROM at power-up.

B. Frequency data automatically stored in EEPROM at optimal lock point.

C. Frequency data is continually output via serial data link while unit is locked.

D. Frequency data may read from EEPROM and/or written to EEPROM via serial data link

when external reference signal is removed.

2. Lock Mode frequency excursion Hi Limit and Lo Limit are determined by data stored in EEPROM.

3. Frequency Slew value is determined by data stored in EEPROM.

 

>STATUS LED

LOXALL21 has provisions for driving 2 LEDS for status indication.

These 2 LEDS are often combined into one component containing both a Red LED and a Green LED.

The Red LED constantly illuminated indicates that a video black signal is present at LOXALL21.

A slowly blinking Red LED indicates that the lower limit of LOXALL21 has been reached.

Sync-lock is not possible.

Change video frame rate, frame rate doubler, or feedback frequency.

A rapidly blinking Red LED indicates that the upper limit of LOXALL21 has been reached.

Sync-lock is not possible.

Change video frame rate, frame rate doubler, or feedback frequency.

The Red and Green LEDS both flashing rapidly, creating a flickering yellow display, indicates that the training period is under way.

Once LOXALL21 is fully trained and sync-locked, the Red and Green LED both remain on constantly, creating a solid Yellow display.

Removing the video black signal extinguishes both LEDS.

> OPERATION IS AUTOMATIC
There is no user setup or alignment because the primary function of LOXALL21 is to align itself.

It’s algorithm waits patiently for a pulse to lock to and when it senses one, it pulls itself, and the target device with it, over to where the pulse is.

It likes the pulse very much and tries to stick right by it’s side.

If the pulse shows unstable behavior LOXALL21 refuses to go along.

If, however, the pulse exhibits stable but slowly changing behavior, LOXALL21 is more than happy to go along for the ride.

Only when the pulse exceeds what LOXALL21 can tolerate does it stop and blink it’s Red LED in alarm.

When LOXALL21 sees pulse behavior that it can tolerate, it immediately starts following again.

 

>Examples

1. Target device uses LOXALL21 Mod to sync-lock to an external sync generator.

During the training period, the target system's LOXALL21 memorizes the frequency needed to produce optimal sync-lock.

A. If the external sync generator is removed and re-applied, minimum relocking time is required.

B. If the external sync generator is removed and no change in the target device's frame rate occurs, the target device can act as a sync generator, duplicating the frame rate of the applied sync generator.

Given repeatibility of the target device's frame rate, this is true even after power down/power up.

C. Frequency data is continously output via serial data link during lock to allow telemetry of the actual frequency being produced by LOXALL21.

2. Target device uses LOXALL21 Mod under external control via serial data link.

A. An external device is used to manually program the frequency.

a. A device is used to slew the device using various step values.

b. A device issues specific data for precise frequency setting.

B. An external device is used to dynamically control the frequency allowing a remote control loop to be established.
