PortaSync is a small, low current, multi-standard sync generator designed for use in portable battery powered applications.

 
 
PortaSync is designed to drop into the Serpac Co. M6 “Remote” series enclosure. This enclosure is available from Digi-Key as part no. SRM6B-ND.
 
 

Applications using the Serpac enclosure generally omit an on/off switch and rely on the installation of a fresh 9V battery before each day of shooting.

The color black signal is output from a single RCA type connector mounted
on the end of the enclosure.

Some customers utilize a 2 pin Lemo connector in place of the RCA type connector.

Sync standard is selected by strapping appropriate holes on the PCB.

This configuration allows the unit to be set up at your shop for a selected sync standard and the user in the field can’t select the wrong standard by mistake.

To utilize PortaSync in the field, one need only install a fresh battery at the start of shooting and to connect the sync cable to the RCA connector.

The primary use for PortaSync in this configuration is as a backup sync generator.

Users keep the PortaSync and a fresh 9V battery in their kits just in case the main generator goes down.

One use in this fashion easily pays for the unit.

One customer in Hollywood sends a PortaSync out on each production.

 
 

Another customer has chosen to mount the PortaSync module in a custom enclosure of their own manufacture.

This application utilizes a 5 position rotary switch in place of the fixed straps of the prior example.

Connected to the PortaSync via a short length of ribbon cable, this allows convenient sync standard selection.

 
 
Another application replaces the 5 position rotary switch with a Hexadecimal thumb-wheel switch, allowing the selection of any one of 16 sync standards.
 
 

In the prior examples, each customer has chosen to output the single color black signal provided by the stock unit.

One user who needed more outputs combined their PortaSync with a 6 output video DA (VDA1X6).

This application utilized an AC powered +/- 12V power supply (for the video DA) in a non-portable application.

The PortaSync module uses a programmable sync generator IC to produce TTL Level Sync, Blanking, H Dr., V Dr., and Field pulses which are available on card (at the IC pins) for experimental use.

Because the sync generator IC is programmable, custom sync standards are easily produced.

PortaSync originally shipped with 5 sync standards – 30.00, 29.97, 25.00, 24.02, and 24.00 FPS.

When a customer wanted to replace 25.00 FPS with 23.98 FPS, we were able to ship updated software
supporting that standard in a very short time.

In short, we supply the core functionality of a programmable sync generator and you provide the power supply and case that match your needs.

PortaSync may also be mounted on a computer video card in conjunction with a LOX2000 module to provide standalone master sync generator capability from your computer.

The video card sync-locks to the on card PortaSync via the on card LOX2000.

Color black is output from the video card and sent to other computers, cameras, or tape decks to be sync-locked.

PortaSync is completely programmable via micro-controller replacement, and is available in frame rates from 12 Frames Per Second (24 Fields Per Second) to 60 Frames Per Second (120 Fields Per Second).

For a nominal fee we will work with you to develop the custom frame rates you may need.

 

One variant of the software allows the following video standards to be selected via a 5 position rotary switch:

STD01 = 655 Lines / 24.00 Frames Per Second (48.00 Fields Per Second).
STD02 = 655 Lines / 24.02 Frames Per Second (49.04 Fields Per Second).
STD03 = 625 Lines / 25.00 Frames Per Second (50.00 Fields Per Second).
STD04 = 525 Lines / 29.97 Frames Per Second (59.94 Fields Per Second).
STD05 = 525 Lines / 30.00 Frames Per Second (60.00 Fields Per Second).

 

Another variant of the software allows the following video standards to be selected via a 16 position Hex switch:

STD01 = 655 Lines / 12.00 Frames Per Second (24.00 Fields Per Second).
STD02 = 655 Lines / 15.00 Frames Per Second (30.00 Fields Per Second).
STD03 = 655 Lines / 18.00 Frames Per Second (36.00 Fields Per Second).
STD04 = 655 Lines / 23.98 Frames Per Second (47.96 Fields Per Second).
STD05 = 655 Lines / 24.00 Frames Per Second (48.00 Fields Per Second).
STD06 = 655 Lines / 24.02 Frames Per Second (48.04 Fields Per Second).
STD07 = 625 Lines / 25.00 Frames Per Second (50.00 Fields Per Second).
STD08 = 525 Lines / 29.97 Frames Per Second (59.94 Fields Per Second).
